Introducing the GreenUp tool to PVH Corp.
Situation: there was an existing tool from 2016, built by the project management team, to measure embodied carbon for each store, scoring it on a leaf rating, green, silver, or gold. By the time I took on the role, it was badly out of date and painful to use. It needed input from general contractors, MEP, and local architects across every market, and project managers genuinely resented the process because of how labour-intensive it was to complete.
Problem: because the data collection was so heavy, a lot of what fed into it was old or inconsistent, and the baseline the scoring was measured against was outdated and too low to be meaningful.
Action: I partnered with Arup in Milan to investigate moving the whole system to a cloud-based platform, one that could aggregate data automatically rather than relying on manual collection from every stakeholder, and that could let us reset the baseline properly against our current sustainability requirements, covering materials, energy, waste, and wellbeing and accessibility.
Complication: this was a genuinely large undertaking, about two years of work to scope and build toward a cloud-based version. Just as it was close to being signed off, PVH had a change in CEO, and the budget to complete it was cut.
Recovery: rather than letting two years of work disappear, I took the data we had gathered across 200 stores and turned it into a report, identifying which concepts and which stores actually performed best, and extracting clear findings, for example, on which finishes and material choices for plasterboard and MDF held up best against our sustainability calculations. I used that to build a new practical guideline for store development, which I still have and would be glad to show you.
Outcome: the cloud tool itself didn’t get finished, but the underlying two years of work didn’t go to waste either, it became a concrete, usable guideline that the team could apply immediately.

The Green Up! tool should be discussed and completed as early as possible in the design stage. The Project Manager is responsible for setting up the tool and holding a meeting with the rest of the team to communicate the Green Up! strategy for the project, including the targeted sustainability level and specific sustainability features to be incorporated beyond business as usual.
The Project Manager should complete their tab first, particularly the “Target Score” in rows 80 – 84. The target score sets how well the store should perform in each of the categories (Materials, Energy etc.). The target score is at the discretion of the Project Manager but should meet or exceed the PVH requirements, note that how the store performs is also shown on the first tab, which shows the ‘certificate’, the score is denominated in leaves. This target score should be referred to by the consultants throughout the design and construction process to confirm compliance. Once the Project Manager has completed their tab, the remaining tabs (Architectural, MEP Services and Contractor) can then be completed.
Data must be entered into the green cells. Once data has been entered the cell turns grey to indicate that the field is complete. Some cells require selection from a drop-down menu and others require raw data entry. Helpful tips and guidance can be found on the right-hand side of each tab, under the ‘Help Section’ title. The column to the left of the help section provides feedback to the user on where performance can be improved.
There are minimum PVH requirements. These are highlighted with orange or green text in the middle of the tab next to the appropriate cell. If a minimum requirement is met, it will be indicated in green. If it is not met, it will be indicated in orange. Failure to meet any of the minimum requirements should be reported and authorised by the Project Manager. Note that failing to meet the minimum requirements will result in a reduced score for the store.
